Inspiration

.$contents->author_name.

   Recently I went on a field trip to the opera house to experience a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While there we heard Dr. Benjamin Carson, a truly great man, speak. He Said that Dr. Martin Luther King has carved a path for all of us to follow, and with a little inspiration we can make a giant change. That I can be whoever I want to be and that my dreams should be the very thing that shal keep a person going, and that without a dream or vision, people perish.  He made us take a niceness pledge, that I can say i've tried hard not to break, and i think that where ever you are right now you should take the same pledge. It is the mind inside of us that makes us who we are, and we need to learn from our mistakes. Push Inspiration

Life: A Long Celebration

.$contents->author_name.   Life has been great lately, nothing bad happening, no one getting hurt, being able to sit back and relax once and a while. I dont have to complain about daily life because ive still got it. By being around people who think positively all the time ive learned to forget about all of the bad things going on and just focussing on having fun with my life. They also made me realize that after everything bad happends you always have something to look forward to. Maybe if everyone thought like that we might actually have a peacefull world. Some what i dream of being like one big party.

The Blueprint for our Community Projects

.$contents->author_name.

                           Hey everybody! Today in JTT, we talked about working in programs that help the community and service learning.  So we laid out some projects that we could do and narrowed it down to the last two. We decided that we would  do a program where we'll find students that will volunteer to tutor kids who have bad grades once we get permission from our school principal. Then we said we would do a documentary and a mural (possibly) about how Detroit used to be a great place and then how it took its downfall. We chose our jobs and we're going to keep preparing for it until it's January, and that's when we start applying it into school.

Why do so many people not use condoms in the face of all the risks of sexually transmitted infections today?

.$contents->author_name.

I am curious to find the answer to this question.  There are so many infections today which are sexually transmitted.

 Many of them are 100% preventable with the use of  condom yet, we have an increase in the number of people affected by HIV, Syphlis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Trichomonas and the HPV.

I would greatly appreciate your input as to why people are not only neglecting to use condoms, but in some cases becomming repeatedly infected with STI's.

Thank you,

Making A Difference

.$contents->author_name.

Everyone wants to make a difference. We want to know that others value what we do.  We want to be liked.  So we try to be nice to others and show them we can be a trusted friend who can make a difference in their lives.

But too often something goes wrong.  We get blamed for something we didn't do or didn't mean to do.  After all, what we intend to do is who we are. And we believe others should be able to figure this out.  When they don't and the problem continues, the easiest course of action is to move away and stick with other friends who agree that we were not treated well.

This happens often and to everyone, and with the same outcome: We subdivide into groups who think and behave as we do.  But this is rarely helpful.  Holding a grudge has no lasting benefit, and when we narrow our lives, we reduce our chance to make new friends.  We miss out on being part of all that is going on around us.  We miss out on new ideas, new thoughts, new opinions.  We can say this doesn't matter, but we do miss out.  To make a difference, we need to understand others, listen to their views, and explain ours.  Through this exchange, we cannot help but be wiser, more tolerant, and better able to help others.  As a result, those who previously rejected us may say, "You know, this guy is not that bad after all!"

So where am I going with this?  Why am I writing this blog on making a difference?  Because I believe so strongly that everyone can make a difference.  No two people are alike, and at some point we all have ideas that might make a real difference to someone else.  Everyone has this potential. The shame is that too often we make decisions and take actions that make it difficult for others to listen to us.  In later blogs, I want to focus on poor decisions we all make. I've already mentioned one: reducing one's circle of friends.  It's a mistake I made.  But it's a mistake I corrected.  And the result is that I now explore my ideas with exciting people I would have otherwise never known.  I love what is happening.

Grown Women

.$contents->author_name.

GIRLS want to control the man in their life

GROWN WOMEN know that if he's truly hers, he doesn't need controlling

GIRLS check you for not calling them

GROWN WOMEN are too busy to realize you hadn't

GIRLS are afraid to be alone

GROWN WOMEN revel in it using it as a time for personal growth

GIRLS ignore the good guys

GROWN WOMEN ignore the bad guys

GIRLS make you come home

GROWN WOMEN make you want to come home

GIRLS leave their schedule wide-open and wait for a guy to call and make plans

GROWN WOMEN make their own plans and nicely tell the guy to get in where he fits in

GIRLS worry about not being pretty and/ or good enough for their man

GROWN WOMEN know that they are pretty and good enough for any man

GIRLS try to monopolize all their man's time (i.e. don't want him hanging with his friends)

GROWN WOMEN realize that a lil' bit of space makes the "together time" even more special and she goes to kick it with her own friends

GIRLS think a guy is weak for crying

GROWN WOMEN offer their shoulder and a tissue

GIRLS want to be spoiled and tell their man "so"

GROWN WOMEN show him and make him comfortable enough to reciprocate without the fear of losing his manhood

GIRLS get hurt by one man and make all men pay for it

GROWN WOMEN know that was just ONE man

GIRLS fall in love and chase aimlessly after the object of their attraction, ignoring all signs

GROWN WOMEN know that sometimes the one you love, doesn't always love you back, and they move on without bitterness

GIRLS will read this and get an attitude

GROWN WOMEN will read this, pass it on to other grown women and their male friends...

The Stress of Education

.$contents->author_name.

Although you may feel that stress is caused by teachers and other adults putting to many activities on their plate, it is caused by the way you organize your priorities. To be an exceptional student, you need to determine if you should do things at certain times. Things such as homework could represent your priorities. if you have homework for all six of your classes, and three days to do them, you need to organize priorities. Make sure you set different times to do the homework. Choose to do two of your homework assignments on each of the three days you have. That way you wont have to worry about doing all six of your homework assignments. Also, if you want to participate in a sport, make sure the times are reasonable towards your priorities. Only make commitments to the things that you can do. Remember,"Don't stress over the small mess."

Decisions, Decisions, and a Choice

.$contents->author_name.  There has been alot on not just my plate but on my family's plate also. Me being the smart and incredible boy I am is in every thing under the sun, including National Junior Honor Society, Junior Tech Team, Academic Games ect.. As if that wasn't enough my whole family have grown sick and tired of all the drugs and violence around this place and they have decided that we are going to move at the end of the school year. There are still things that I love about this place like, the kids yelling trick or treat, the good nieghbors that we have known all our lives, and the big park across the street. Im just trying not to get caught up in all the Drama. And baseball season hasn't even started yet.

A General Welcome

.$contents->author_name.

I think that the best way to introduce this blog is probably to introduce myself. I'm currently a junior at the University of Michigan studying Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Spanish Language and Literature (say that 10x fast). Both of my parents attended college, but are the only ones in our family to do so. As such, navigating the college arena is still a bit unfamiliar; we haven't been doing it for generations.

For three years, I've learned a lot about the odds and ins of a large university like Michigan. I think it's only fair to share some of that. And, that's what I intend to do here. Please feel free to leave me any comments or questions you'd like to see addressed, and I'll write whatever I can think of, from how to make the system work for you to how to deal with new social situations--after all, college has a whole new set of rules.
